Description The lowest floor level uncovered in Tr. 126, consisting of tightly-laid square terracotta tiles. The tile sizes average around 30cm x 30cm x 10 cm. The tiles appear to have been dry laid, as no mortar bedding was evident in the excavated area—but this conclusion must remain tentative due to the state of preservation and the nature of the overlying deposits. The floor tiles were fairly well preserved except in the area of the heaviest deposit resulting from the South Wall (Locus 2) superstructure collapse. Because of their fragile nature, some of the complete tiles found in situ cracked due to movement of the excavators; these broken tiles were secured and left in place. The floor surface provided the foundation for the Terracotta Tile Vaults (Locus 18) and Hypocaust Tile Columns (Locus 19) that supported the Suspended Floor (Locus 13).
