Definition | South Wall of Hypocaust Chamber |
Description | This wall is the south boundary of the Hypocaust Chamber. Two types of construction are visible in the wall. The preserved east and west ends, where it bonds with Wall Loci 7 and 8 respectively, were built with sandstone ashlars using wet-mortar and a few snecking stones; approximately 1.0 to 1.5 east west meters of this construction type is evident at either end, and consists of 1-2 rows of stones. The central expanse of the wall, however, is composed of a dense conglomerate consisting of a few random boulders and ashlars, many terracotta floor/wall tiles, small field stones, and broken pottery. This is all set in thick layers of grayish mortar containing many cinders. The overall construction of the conglomerate section is uneven and patchy. No distinct courses are evident. |
