Stage Description | Subflooring construction. |
Description | This locus is represented by the remnants of twelve terracotta tile hypocaust columns. The columns are constructed of terracotta tiles. The base of each column consisted of 2-3 square terracotta tiles (depending on thickness; average sizes: 0.30 m x 0.30 m x 0.07 m). Surmounting these square tiles was a stack of circular terracotta tiles (average size: diameter: 0.22-0.23 m; thickness 0.6-0.7 m). The original height of each column was between 0.60-0.62 m, with the variance probably being accommodated by the use of mortar. The exact number of circular tiles in each column varied based on tile thickness. All of the terracotta tiles appear to be have been laid using thin layers of wet mortar, but the state of preservation belies certainty on this point. The rows of circular tile columns in the subflooring is localized to the north south expanse between the Semi-circular Feature (Locus 10) and the South Wall (Locus 2). The subflooring support structure to the east and west of this area utilized piers or vaults constructed from square tiles (see Loci 18, 19B). |
