Description This is the section of the Middle Pier Wall (Tr. 97, 2004, Locus 11) exposed in the SP 105 sounding. It is constructed of both hewn and dressed sandstone ashlars of varying sizes, interspersed with snecking stones, laid in three courses using mortar. The lowest course rests on the rubble foundation construction of Locus 25, and corresponds with the top surface of the Locus 9 terracing course. The thickness is unknown, but presumed to be at least 1.20 m—the miminum thickness measured for the Middle Pier Wall during the excavation of Trench 97. However, the thickness is likely to be greater, as the lower courses exposed in the current sounding are offset a bit from the plane of the upper couses – suggesting that the wall widens toward its base on the rubble foundation construction. The section of this wall is assigned to Stage 3 since it had to be in place prior to the laying of the Stage 4 leveling courses for the W CP East floor (Tr. 97, 2004, Locus 25).
Preserved Height ca. 1.00 m (as exposed in sounding).
