Definition Ashlar construction beneath Locus 4 in east extension
Description This is a header and stretcher ashlar construction set beneath the Locus 4 leveling course exposed in the east extension to the central sondage. It is situated at the level generally corresponding to the Locus 6 soil and rubble fill found in the central sondage and west extension. The stretcher ashlar measures 0.80 m long-by-ca. 0.20 m high. The header ashlar has been set on its edge, so that its total width (ca. 0.30 m) spans the combined depth of Loci 4 and 6. This construction seems to be an intentional reuse of dressed ashlars to aid the creation of a solid level surface for Locus 4. This was the only example of this type of construction effort exposed in either the leveling or terracing courses exposed in the sounding, so it is unknown whether the technique was used elsewhere in this stratum. The feature is assigned to Stage 4 because of its apparent role in leveling for the W CP East floor (Tr. 97, 2004, Locus 25). The feature was left in situ.
Preserved Height ca. 0.30 m.
Bottom (m) Closing elevation: 892.608 m.
Top (m) Opening elevation: 892.788 m.
Phase Description Phase V: Late Nabataean CE 1st c. redesign and repairs.
Size 1.10 m north south-by-unknown east west.
Combined with Loci 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (?), 6, 7, 8.
Architectural or Soil Locus? Architectural
