Description | The soil fill found just beneath the pavers removed for the sounding. Visible in the fill were some raised ridges of compacted soil that framed the positions of the overlying floor pavers. These ridges resulted from the weight of the floor pavers, which rested directly on the fill in the absence of a mortar floor bedding under this area. The compacted fill consisted of a mixture of fine clay, silt, and sand, with a Munsell Color range between 7.5 YR 5/4 (Brown) to 4/4 (Brown). The fill was quite dry and created a lot of dust during excavation. Excavation produced four iron arrowheads of the same type as those recovered above the floor during the clearance of Trench 97, 2004. Other special finds included a bronze pin fragment, a possible iron weapon tip, one-half of an ivory/bone disk, and a small green bead that was found in proximity to the surface of an ashlar in the top course of Wall Locus 6. Two coins were found, one of which (SF-2 Seq. No. SP104007) was resting on the top surface of the soil fill immediately below a paver in the southwest corner of the sounding. A large number of pottery sherds were recovered, along with examples of metal, bone, shell, glass, and a single olive pit (VEG-1 Seq. No. SP104006). Amongst the stucco fragments obtained were two tiny pieces of wall plaster with blue paint. The remaining stucco finds were lumps of a gritty, white construction material¾which may be remnants of the original plaster floor bedding that were reused as fill in this stratum (see Discussion below). This soil locus is a construction fill associated with the last stage of structural activity represented in the sounding. |
