Definition | East-West depression in floor (Locus 25) between the vaults (Loci 12, 14) |
Description | This concave depression in the West Cryptoporticus East floor extends east west between the entrances of Vault Loci 12 and 14, and is set with four rows of pavers. The floor pavers at this point appear to have original been laid flush with the top of the construction inserted into the entrance of Vault Locus 12 (Locus 29), but now they lie several centimeters lower, suggesting that the settling of the depression occurred at a later stage. At present, neither the cause nor the purpose of the depression is known. At the northwest edge of the depression, abutting Vault Locus 14, one of the pavers had been previously lifted and replaced upside down, so that it stood ca. 0.10 m higher than the other pavers. It was removed during the current excavation and a visual inspection of the fill surface beneath was conducted, which revealed no finds. No sondage was performed in deference to a larger Special Project proposed later in this report. The paver was measured and recorded (Seq. No. 97768) as part of Locus 13 and then replaced to its original position. The fill (Locus 15) within the depression contained many small finds, including one of the richest deposits of metal in Trench 97. |
