Description | A wall built from a combination of dressed ashlars, hewn blocks, and snecking stones laid in four courses using wet-mortar; larger blocks were used in this wall, resulting in one course less than was found in Wall Locus 3. This wall also seems to be compounded of one row, and its top elevation is continguous with the section of the Locus 5 leveling course exposed to the south. The north face of this wall is even and sturdy with no evidence of repair. As with Wall Locus 3, the stones used in its construction appear to be the same mixture of sandstone with varying degrees of hardness and both natural and slightly-worked snecking stones. This wall has only eight ashlars exhibiting Nabatean dressing technique, distributed thoughout the face¾although four of these do appear together in the third course from the top. The angle of the Nabataean dressing on these stones is consistent throughout the wall face. However, a single ashlar in the center of the lowest course has a finely worked rectilinear boss (ca. 0.02 m thick) around the raised, dressed face. The use of a single stone with such fine craftsmanship in this location may suggest that all of these dressed ashlars are in re-use. The wall bonds with the south edge of both vaults (Tr. 97, 2004, Loci 12 and 14) indicating the construction of these features was contemporary. |
