Stage Stage 1a/1b
Definition Oblique canalization wall.
Description Locus 8 is a roughly built wall of flat slabs and chips of limestone, sandstone, and tile chinking. It extends obliquely from southeast to northwest into the south balk of the trench towards Locus 4, the East north-south Retaining Wall of the staircase (abuts or is cut by?). In fact, only about 2.5 m are currently exposed, and the relationship with surrounding architecture is unclear. It is assumed by the excavator that as Locus 8 extends southeast into Trench 32, it abuts or bonds at (nearly) a right angle with the other canalization wall Locus 30, since the latter extends from the southwest to the northeast. It is also assumed that the exterior (north) wall of the canalization is exposed, and the interior of the canal is to the south; however, it is still buried in the south balk.
Phase IV
