DAILY LOG

A.M./P.M.          16 July 2013

Locus 8 was declared this morning.  It occupies the same area of the trench as locus 7 .  It has less stones than locus 7 (fist-size and smaller), and the soil is dark yellowish- brown in color.  The opening co-ordinate depths are equivalent to the closing co-ordinate depths of locus 7.

Opening Co-ordinates of locus 8:

NW (68-E/41-S):  86 cm. below datum point = 26.92 m. above absolute elevation.

NE (69-E/41-S): 83 cm. below datum point = 26.95 m. above absolute elevation.

SE (69-E/44-S):  100 cm. below datum point = 26.78 m. above absolute elevation.

SW (67-E/44-S):  96 cm. below datum point = 26.82 m. above absolute elevation.

W (68-E/41.5-S):  87 cm. below datum point = 26.91 m. above absolute elevation.

Photos were taken, and excavation commenced with pick and sorting into buckets with every third bucket sifted.  The locus was lowered approximately 10 cm. today.  The two tree stumps in the trench were removed.  Approximately 1/2 bowl (16 cm. in diameter/8 cm. in depth) of small well-worn terracotta fragments was recovered.  Approximately 1/5 latte-box of pottery sherds was found

Special Finds:

1. Locus 8 68.3-E/43.5-S 26.83 m. above absolute elevation Iron slag

2.  Locus 8 68.1-E/41.8-S 26.86 m. above absolute elevation Bronze piece

3.  Locus 8 68.6-E/42.2-S 26.78 m. above absolute elevation Iron shot

4.  Locus 8 68.1-E/41.5-S 26.86 m. above absolute elevation Iron slag

Special Finds (cont.):

5. Locus 8 67.7-E/43.7-S 26.79 m. above absolute elevation Iron slag

6.  Locus 8 68.0-E/41.4-S 26.81 m. above absolute elevation Iron nail

along with one fragment of bone.  In the sifted buckets four fragments of terracotta were found along with one sherd of pottery.  Stones are emerging in the northern sector of the locus that appear to be a continuation of the feature being uncovered north of the trench.
