DAILY LOG

A.M./P.M.          12 July 2013

It was decided not to excavate locus 6 at this time, but to extend the trench one meter to the east.  The feature within locus 6 may link up to the feature that is emerging north-east of the trench.  The extension is an attempt to confirm this.  Co-ordinate points were laid out and depths measured.  Photographs were taken.  The new locus is designated locus 7 .

Opening Co-ordinates of locus 7:

NW (68-E/41-S):  73 cm. below datum point = 27.05 m. above absolute elevation.

NE (69-E/41-S): 70 cm. below datum point = 27.08 m. above absolute elevation.

SE (69-E/44-S):  89 cm. below datum point = 26.89 m. above absolute elevation.

SW (67-E/44-S):  84 cm. below datum point = 26.94 m. above absolute elevation.

W (68-E/41.5-S):  76 cm. below datum point = 27.02 m. above absolute elevation.

This locus is the top-soil level.  The soil is dark-brown with numerous fist-size and smaller stones.  There are also numerous roots.  This locus is equivalent to locus 2 to the east.

Excavation of this locus was with pick and shovel with hand sorting into a wheelbarrow.  Approximately 1/2 bowl of small well-worn terracotta fragments was recovered.  Five sherds of pottery was found.  A possible forno fragment was made a special find (S.F. #1).  The locus was lowered approximately 10 cm. today.

Special Finds:

1. Locus 7 68-69-E/41-44-S Approximately 26.86 m. above absolute elevation Forno fragment
