DAILY LOG
A.M./P.M. 17 July 2013
Excavation continued in locus 8 , using pick and sorting into buckets with every third bucket sifted. The southern sector of locus 8 was lowered a few centimeters then the locus was closed. The area immediately below locus 8 was declared locus 9 . In locus 8 today approximately two dozen small well-worn fragments of terracotta were recovered along with eight sherds of pottery. In the sifted buckets two small well-worn fragments of terracotta were found. Locus 9 has fewer fist-size and smaller stones than locus 8. Also, several larger stones are evident in the northern sector of the locus. The soil of this locus is yellowish-olive brown. Photos were taken and co-ordinate depths measured.
Opening Co-ordinates of locus 9:
NW (68-E/41-S): 92 cm. below datum point = 26.86 m. above absolute elevation.
NE (69-E/41-S): 91 cm. below datum point = 26.87 m. above absolute elevation.
SE (69-E/44-S): 109 cm. below datum point = 26.69 m. above absolute elevation.
Special Finds:
1. Locus 8 68.5-E/43.8-S 26.61 m. above absolute elevation Bronze sheet
2. Locus 8 67.9-E/42.9-S 26.72 m. above absolute elevation Bronze chunk
3. Locus 9 68.1-E/42.6-S 26.67 m. above absolute elevation Iron slag
SW (67-E/44-S): 106 cm. below datum point = 26.72 m. above absolute elevation.
W (68-E/41.5-S): 96 cm. below datum point = 26.82 m. above absolute elevation.
Excavation commenced in locus 9 with pick and sorting into buckets with every third bucket sifted. The locus was lowered approximately 10 cm. today (lower in the southern sector than in the northern sector). Approximately 2/3 bowl of terracotta fragments was recovered (the larger pieces have cleaner breaks than the smaller pieces). Approximately 1/4 latte-box of pottery sherds was found along with one piece of bone. One piece of vitrified material was made a bulk find along with nine pieces of iron slag. From the sifted buckets one small piece of bronze was found along with one sherd of pottery and two pieces of iron slag (the piece of bronze was made a bulk find).
[It was later determined that two of the pieces initially identified as iron slag was vitrified material (1 Aug. 2013)]
