General remarks This locus was designated due to its color difference from the surrounding loci. It extends over the SW quadrant of L136. It can be described as a scatter of baked orange clay, which at places is fused with metal slag. After excavating the locus, it appears that it is a melted kiln due to overheating. The locus contains large amount of big ceramic vessel(s) sherds. Below the burnt material and ash layer, in the north part of the kiln pit, an area covered with white reed pseudomorph layer was exposed. The bottom of this pit was lined with hard packed mud, underneath which is dirt.

Has note Contexts excavated in trenches were recorded using the "locus system." A locus is any discrete three-dimensional entity excavated in a trench. The key to the locus system is the recognition that a locus is any one thing. Differences in soil composition or texture are therefore as important as, for example, the difference between a pit and a wall. If two entities were distinct, they were considered separate loci and were therefore assigned separate locus numbers. It should also be noted that every context excavated in a trench was given a locus number and thus the trench itself is made up completely of excavated loci.
