Daily Trench Journal

Area D

Trench 8

June 10, 2007

Recorder: Mila Hover (a.k.a. Melek hanim, MH)
Workers: Mizbah, Necat, Sadik

Today, we continued to removal of the wall (L135) which began the previous day. The fill bellow the remainder of the wall is now considered part of L136. Thus, the dimensions of this locus have expanded and now measure 3.20m(NE) x 2.50m (EW).

During the cleaning of the locus, areas of orange clay appeared on the surface, and our goal is to investigate whether this is a feature.

Work continues in L134, where the level needs to be brought to the current level in L136 in order to follow any possible connection. The wall between the two loci, L135, is now completely removed and closed. Both areas are now brought to the same level.

L139, clay bin with reed mat, is to be removed and any observations will be recorded.

During the removal, soil samples were collected for floatation as well as a carbon sample. We observed that the clay bin containing the reed pseudomorph impression of reed rests on top of a hard surface with an ash layer over it.

Work continues in L141, adjacent to L136. The fill will be reduced by 5cm layers. Artifacts are collected as they become visible.

The orange clay clusters appear at the border of L136 and L141, but no connection can be established yet. Near the surface, a sample of the orange baked clay with greenish substance was collected. It is fused together with the clay, and Dr. Parker thinks it is a metal slag.

In the area where the wall (L135) stood, there is a rather large cluster of the clay. West of it, a small round shape feature similar to the midden in the north baulk became visible.

This feature was given a new locus number, L145.

In L141, another concentration of ground stone is discovered. Along the south edge of the locus, a lens of ash with a fragment of ground stone lying on top of it is recorded.

Has note The purpose of the daily journal was to record the activities taking place in a trench each day. This included which loci were excavated, how and why loci were excavated and the ongoing impressions of the relationships among loci. It should be noted that journals record the actions, impressions and ideas of trench supervisors during the excavations. They are not, therefore, the final interpretations or syntheses of the emerging data.
