Trench 8

Today, work began in L143, by removing 5cm layers off the current elevation of the fill in this area of the trench (total for the day, 0.2m). After this locus was completed, work began on the territory of L142 (west of L43). This locus is defined by a high amount of ash content in its fill and a hard, semi-circular clay feature in its middle section.
The first layer removed from this fill is 5cm and revealed an ash-stained hard surface. The color of the surface bellow the stain is yellowish brown and appears to be clay. An area of raised harder surfaces is forming.
The ash lens covers the entire area of the locus at this elevation. Bone, shell, pottery sherds, lithics (including obsidian and ground stone implements) are recovered from the fill.
In L139—midden in the north baulk of the trench over the area of L149 (former L134) was excavated and recorded. The contents of this bin were packed densely and consist of pot sherds, small rocks, some ash, and a single small burnt bone. Its total depth is 0.2m. Its visible part is a semi-circle with radius 0.2m. It is contained within the fill of the already removed locus L134, and rests in silty, light brown dirt.
New loci assigned today are: L146, 145, 147, 148. There is some uncertainty as to the designation of the new loci borders. To resolve this problem, we will continue to excavate the fill of the trench and observe any possible architecture, features, surfaces, concentrations of ground stone and/or lithic debitage and pottery and make conclusions about their relation to each other. At this time, no architecture is present, except for L144, a mud brick wall, cut by the ash pit (L140) in the NE corner of the trench.
We will continue to follow the distribution of ground stone implements in L148, where they appear in large concentration and are clustered.
Another area of interest is the hard clay surfaces in L142 which are stained by ash.

Has note | The purpose of the daily journal was to record the activities taking place in a trench each day. This included which loci were excavated, how and why loci were excavated and the ongoing impressions of the relationships among loci. It should be noted that journals record the actions, impressions and ideas of trench supervisors during the excavations. They are not, therefore, the final interpretations or syntheses of the emerging data. |
