Architectural or Soil Locus? Soil
Description Locus 5 had a Munsell Color of 5Y 3/1. It was loosely packed fine gray soil. There was some sand and many charcoal pieces, as well as crumbled remains of stucco. It contained some larger pebbles, measuring approximately 0.05 m – 0.10 m square. Pottery was more prevalent here than in previous or later loci. This soil loci seems to be degraded mortar, indicated by its gray color and the presence of charcoal and burnt residue (added for lime content). As it is directly below the terracotta tile floor, which retained some of its grouting mortar intact which had a similar constitution, it is a viable theory that this locus is in fact degraded mortar bedding for the tile floor.
