Description in this area. On 26 July, 2001, plastering of the cistern at the south extent of the east wall, nearest the shaft, began to flake off the walls, and some of this plaster was saved for analysis (Seq. No. SP 85106). Excavators noted that the plaster appeared to have been applied in three layers, which, according to Christopher Tuttle, a graduate student in Brown University’s Center for Old World Art and Archaeology, is not a particularly thick application, particularly for a structure of this size. It was also noted that the plaster was rather coarse and porous, and not particularly fine. Crystalline calcification can be seen on the plaster walls and faces of the columns throughout the cistern (particularly on the west fact of Locus 6, the east bedrock column), nearly to the ceiling, suggesting that nearly the entire cistern was at some point full of water.
