Phase Description | Phase IV: Nabataean Grand Design: 1st c. BCE to CE 1st c. The remainder of the subterranean canalization is... |
Size | Shaft cut is 1.41 m in diameter at its lowest current point-by-1.64 m in depth from its mouth to the opening into the cistern along its wall; the opening at the top of the shaft is 0.98 m in north south length-by-1.01 m in east west width. |
Description | The cut for the shaft feeding the cistern from the east side. Also identified in SP 84 as Locus 22 (Seq. No. SP 84141). The round cut of this shaft led us to believe initially that it would open into a bell-shaped cistern, but we were surprised to find that the cistern was square. The shaft has a ledge at an elevation of 903.372 m on its east side, which would have slowed water coming in from the small canal feeding it on its southwest side (SP 84 Locus 33, Seq. No. SP 84188) before dropping it into the cistern. The edge of this feature is 1.41 m in diameter from southeast to northwest, and it is 0.40 m wide from east to west. |
Top (m) | Opening Elevation: 0.00 m above Sub datum SP 84 D or 905.164 m. |
Definition | Cut for shaft of cistern |
Cuts | Locus 4, bedrock. |
Stage Description | Cutting and furnishing of the cistern and overlying and connecting canalization. |

Bottom (m) | Closing Elevation: Shaft opens into cistern at 0.00 m above Sub datum SP 85 E or 903.372 m. |
Location | In southeast of SP 85. |
