Phase Description | Phase IV: Nabataean Grand Design: 1st c. BCE to CE 1st c. The remainder of the subterranean canalization is... |
Stage | Stage 2 |
Top (m) | Opening Elevation: Roughly 902.840 m in the east. |
Description | A large wall in the south of the cistern incorporating two arches with large niches behind each. The stone work is not well executed, and there is a thick layer of plaster on its surface, suggesting that it was somewhat makeshift in construction. This wall is built up against the small wall in the southwest of the shaft cut, which is better constructed, and must be earlier. Due to the character, masonry, and position of this wall, and the weakness of the bedrock ceiling in the south of the cistern, it seems that this wall was built for support in this critical area. The wall is only as thick as the arches, and the construction separating the niches behind the arches is a separate north south wall (Locus 24). |
Relations | Built up to: Locus 22, short wall on southwest edge of shaft, Locus 4, bedrock, on western edge and ceiling. |
Phase | IV |
Location | Built along south edge of cistern. |
Size | 7.30 m in east west length-by-0.60 m in north south thickness-by-2.08 m deep in center to the level of cistern fill. |
Bottom (m) | Closing Elevation: Not recorded. |
Definition | South wall in cistern |
Stage Description | Strengthening of the ceiling support system (probably shortly after Stage 2, or in its later extent). |
