Description Locus 1 consists of soil (Munsell 5YR 5/6 Yellowish Red) and other debris which has washed down from the hill behind the temple complex following the destruction of the rear part of the building, as well as architectural fragments, both structural and decorative. The upper part of the locus has been heavily disturbed due to the activity in adjacent trenches (Trenches 15, 27, 22, and 9). However, apart from several contemporary items found near the surface, the material remains and soil color uncovered at lower depths remained similar or identical to those higher, precluding the necessity of naming a new soil locus through the extent of the excavation. A number of localized soil color variations (Munsell 10YR 6/8 Brownish Yellow with flecks of 5Y 4/4 Olive), mostly along walls and near fallen ashlars, were recorded. A number of very small sink holes were noticed under ashlars upon their removal. A complete Byzantine lamp (see Seq. No. 55047) was found in one of these sinkholes at an elevation of 908.556 m in the south of the trench near the wall. Very little pottery, with the exception of roof tiles, was found in Trench 55, consistent with the results of previous trenches at the rear of the Temple. Perhaps the most significant of the architectural fragments found in the East Chamber were the distinctive channeled ashlars like those used in the Theater (see Discussion/Interpretation below). Other architectural fragments included arch ashlars, acanthus leaves, and other decorative architectural fragments in both limestone and sandstone, which probably represent the remains of capitals and cornices from adjacent areas such as the East Corridor.
