Definition Hexagonal Pavement.
Stage Description Construction of the West Staircase and Lower Temenos Retaining wall.
Description Locus 18 is the justly-famous Hexagonal Pavement of the Lower Temenos, of which large patches remain between the flanking colonnades north from the Retaining Wall, Locus 15, to the Propylaea Steps. In Trench 18, the pavers abut the curb bedding, Locus 19, and are overlapped by the north edge of the curb, Locus 20. They are cut of limestone, about 0.95 m across from point to opposite point, and, while some are chipped, cracked or exfoliating, the stretch in Trench 18 and adjoining Trench 39 are fairly well-preserved and are very impressive indeed.
