Stage Description | Temple expansion into a tetrastyle in antis structure. Construction of the West Corridor Wall. |
Definition | Wall 5, engaged to the Paul column (Locus 4). |
Description | This locus, 0.85 m long-x-1.17 m wide-x-3.21 m in height, emerged in Locus 1. It is constructed of sandstone and limestone and is engaged to the Paul column (Locus 4). The wall and the column are integrated so that they have a sculpted arch pilaster on both the east and west faces. The string course of stone below the wall allows the space for the Locus 16 pavers and the Locus 18 fill to abut the wall. The sandstone blocks are diagonally-dressed to accept plaster, as evidenced by the plaster inclusions in the spaces between the stones. At the base, the limestone block was carved to show an Attic cornice base for the pilaster, and it aligned with the Attic style base of the Paul column (Locus 4) in antiquity. There is a break and slip of 0.03 m between the two bases, indicating seismic activity in antiquity. No foundation trench was excavated this season. |
