The day began with the lowering of the northern and western border with CB 53 and 57 respectively, using hand picks. Baulk walls were established in the west and south. In the course of this, several large roots were removed. While trimming the northern border, a square piece of stone with apparent chisel marks was found (Special Find No. 1)

Once the trimming of boundaries was complete, Locus 2 was declared. Locus 2 is characterised by a brownish yellow soil which is distinctly fine grained and becomes dusty when exposed to the sun. It extends across the entirety of CB 56. Opening elevations were taken:

NW 25.56

NE 25.64

SW 25.40

SE 25.32

Pick passes were then completed over the northwestern and central areas of the trench in Locus 2. While working in the central area by stump D a series of small rocks began to emerge, but it became clear quickly that these were a natural formation.

A pick pass was made along the eastern side of the trench to expose more of Locus 2. The rocks in this area were defined with trowels, but are not as yet forming a clear feature. The south west corner was thenpicked, and 4 small pieces of terracotta emerged here amongst roots. The northern area of the trench was picked again, and then the central area.
