Locus 1 (topsoil) was declared and opening photographs and elevations taken. The elevations are:

NW (A) 25.62

NE (B) 25.68

SW (C) 25.46

SE (D) 25.38

Locus 1 is characterised by a grey grown dry soil with plenty of roots and plant material. A pick pass was made to begin the day in the north west corner of the trench and the resulting loose dirt was removed with trowels. Another pick pass was completed to the east, before moving southwards and then west. For this early stage of topsoil removal, pick passes and collection continued across the whole trench moving from north to south.

After the first full pick pass of the entire trench area was complete, the soil clearly remained Locus 1 type, although in the east around the stumps some small patches of a yellow brown finer\'ground soil are beginning to be seen. Some small pieces of terracotta were also found in the central eastern area (3 pieces) Around stump G, several fist sized rocks were seen in a semi-ovoid shape associated with 2 small pieces of terracotta. 4 large roots were removed from the trench and the second set of pick passes began in the NE area.

The second pick pass was completed across the whole trench. It was clear that the yellow brown soil is beocming more established in the eastern area of the trench. Hand picks were used to excavate the SE corner and expose more of Stumps F and G.
