DAILY LOG
A.M. 9 July 2013
Excavation continued in locus 5 this morning, using pick and hand sorting into buckets. Every third bucket was sifted. Near the end of the morning troweling only was used to define the stones emerging in the center of the trench and to remove the final bits of soil in locus 5. Locus 5 was closed. Photos were taken and co-ordinate depths measured.
Closing Co-ordinates of locus 5:
NW (65-E/41-S): 120 cm. below datum point = 26.58 m. above absolute elevation.
NE (68-E/41-S): 115 cm. below datum point = 26.63 m. above absolute elevation.
E (68-E/41.5-S): 118 cm. below datum point = 26.60 m. above absolute elevation.
SE (67-E/44-S): 130 cm. below datum point = 26.48 m. above absolute elevation
SW (65-E/44-S): 132 cm. below datum point = 26.46 m. above absolute elevation.
Approximately 1/3 bowl of terracotta fragments was recovered. Approximately 2/3 latte-box of pottery sherds was found along with 13 pieces of bone. In the sifted buckets five sherds of pottery were found along with three small fragments of terracotta. A bronze chunk was made a special find (S.F. #1).
Special Finds:
1. Locus 5 67.1-E/42.8-S 26.58 m. above absolute elevation Bronze chunk

In the afternoon a sketch of the locus was made. In the northern sector of the locus galestra type soil is beginning to dominate. In the southern sector of the locus the soil is a light yellowish-brown. The central sector of the trench is occupied by stones filling a depression running roughly west to east.
