DAILY LOG

A.M./P.M.        8 July 2013

Locus 5 was declared this morning.  The opening co-ordinates (including depths) are the same as the closing co-ordinates of locus 4 .  The soil of this locus is of a similar color as locus 4.  However, some galestra is appearing in the northern sector of the trench and a sizable stone is emerging in the central-western sector.  The terracotta fragments being recovered from this locus appear to have less abraded edges than those of previous loci.

Opening Co-ordinates of locus 5:

NW (65-E/41-S):  109 cm. below datum point = 26.69 m. above absolute elevation.

NE (68-E/41-S):  108 cm. below datum point = 26.70 m. above absolute elevation.

E (68-E/41.5-S):  107 cm. below datum point = 26.71 m. above absolute elevation.

SE (67-E/44-S):  116 cm. below datum point =  26.62 m. above absolute elevation

SW (65-E/44-S):  120 cm. below datum point =  26.58 m. above absolute elevation.

Excavation commenced with picking and then sorting into buckets.  Every third bucket

was sifted.  As excavation continued more stones (from approximately 15-40 cm. across) appeared along with further pockets of galestra.  The locus was lowered between approximately 5-10 cm. today.  Approximately one bowl (16 cm. in diameter/ 8 cm. in depth) of terracotta fragments were recovered.  Approximately one latte-box of pottery sherds was found along with eight pieces of bone.  In the sifted buckets approximately 1/2 dozen small fragments of terracotta was recovered along with six sherds of pottery and one piece of bone.
