AM

The morning began with leveling out the western section of the trench. The soil, like the previous day, is still dry and clumpy. Small roots are still riddled throughout the topsoil dirt as well. Terra Cotta and pottery fragments are still very few in number.

A second pick pass was thrown continuing out towards the west section of the trench. The soil is beginning to be more clay-like in texture, but the amount of terra cotta and

pottery remains to be scarce.  Organic matter such as roots are still numerous.

In the third pick pass towards the west end of the trench, two fragmented pieces of modern pottery were found, which confirms that the layer of soil is decontextualized. In addition to this, slightly more terracotta was found through the use of trowels and the shoveling of loose dirt.

PM

The afternoon began with trimming the baulk walls with handpicks and trowels.  The trench was also leveled in preparation of Locus 2 .  The soil is darker and more clay-like in texture. The roots were clipped and dirt was sorted into buckets. The tree stump in the north west corner of the trench is still present with more of its root structure showing.  The amount of terracotta and pottery are still few in number.

Locus 2 was opened in the afternoon after a noticeable change in soil color and texture was observed.  The soil was more clay-like and darker in the north east corner. The south east corner had soil that was more dry and brittle in nature.  There is a stump present at the eastern section of the trench, which is the cause of the soil to be darker around the roots. There has only been one terracotta fragment in the eastern area.  Upon clearing more dirt, two more terracotta fragments were found along with one piece of pottery.
