The rest of the rock packing in grids C-E/28-30 was removed today.  ( See photographs on opposite page .)  Occasional fragments of pan tile were found intermixed within the heavy stones.  Work then continued in grids A-B/28-30 which were excavated down to the "galestra" layer at a depth approx. 1 m 26 beneath the level of the northern foundation wall of the northern extension.

A stratum of brown soil approx. 20 cm thick rests above the galestra layer which in turn lies under the foundation wall of the northern extension.  In this layer of brown soil beneath the foundation walls was found a piece of worked bone.  Other materials included fragments of a large bucchero, perhaps "bean," bowl, numerous bones and an abundance of pan tile.

Work the nresumed on an additional cut into grid D/28-30 at a depth of approx. 2 m 20 when measured from the top of the northern extension foundation walls.  It was here that a bucchero goddess head was found in grid D-30.

All finds of the day were found either in the brown soil beneath the stone packing of grids C-E/28-30 or in the brown soil above the galestra layer in grids A-B/28-30.  The latter area, excavated to the outer edge of the northern extension foundation wall and below, produced a variety of bones and pan tiles at a level above the galestra.

Work continued today in grids C-E/28-30 in an attempt to define the "galestra" layer that appears to follow the slope of the hill beneath the removed rock packing.  The only find of the day was a statue fragment preserving an ear.  This was found in D-28 well below the removed rock packing.
