Locus 4 was declared. THis locus is defined by a small grained, fina dn soft soil which is darker than the surrounding Locus 3 clay. The Locus forms a circular feature, which for excavation purposes has een enclosed in a 1m by 1.3m square. Opening elevations and co-ordinates for Locus 4 are:

Opening photographs for Locus 4 were taken. While Locus 4 was described, baulk walling took place on the eastern baulk. As Locus 4 appears to be a feature cut into Locus 3 it will be excavated separately, with trowels alone in order to explore the fill in detail. The shape of the cut into Locus 3 is being defined more clearly, and terracotta, bone and pottery found. Also found was a piece of bronze. (Special Find No.1)

Trowelling continued until the soft soil that characterised Locus 4 disappeared. In its place was seen a harder soil, lighter in colour than locus 3 but notably dark, clay like and sticky.

Immersed in this new locus were 3 rocks and several obvious pieces of terracotta. It is clearly a new soil type, and as such has been declared Locus 5. Opening photographs were taken.

Locus 5 forms a clearly circular shape within the area demarcated Locus 4. Diagrams B and C demonstrate the position of Locsu 5 within the wider trench and in detail.

The soil in Locus 5 is becoming steadily darker, although it remains differebnt in tone to Locus 3- it is more a yellow than a blue-black shade of dark brown. The circular shape is remarkably coherent. Pieces of burnt terracotta and organic material are appearing. While trowelling, a piece of Ionic pottery was found. (Special Find No. 2)

Trowelling recommenced in Locus 5. The soil remains dark and relatively loose, with carbone fragments and burn tterracotta in association. A small piece of slag (Special Find No. 3) was found but unfortunately lost and not recovered. The postiion of the slag was, however, recorded nonetheless.

Shortly after this unfortunate incident, four fist size rocks were seen and defined in the bottom of Locus 5. THe rocks appeared at 24.72 AE. Beneath the rocks Locus 5 is continuing, althoguh it is very slightly lighter in colour.

THe fatuer is becoming more circular as we descend. A large rock and pice of terracotta were exposed and defined at the end of the day.
