Work continued today with the aim of lowering the entire trench to approximately 40-45 cm. below surface level. In I/86-88 and part of 89 (a large stump takes up much of G-I/89-90) the soil remained a light plastery soil with bits of red and black burn scattered throughout. Very little material was coming from here yesterday and today. A couple of fragments of tile and pithos and about 1/2 cassetta of small plaster pieces. Almost no pottery was found here or much bone. In short virtually no material came from this stratum which lay underneath the modern plaster dump and underlying browny-grey soil. However, two finds must be noted as anomalous. Find # 2 was a perfect decorated fine redware spindlewhorl. Find # 3 was a large fragment of an extremely well preserved Potnia Theron handle. Yesterday it was hypothosized that this stratum might have been a dump. It still seems likely that despite the presence of the two finds given the depth of the material.
Excavation in these meters at this depth will stop between
H and I to be further lowered later. Priority will be given to lowering the cut down to the floor level of the building in order to further define the northern parameter with particular attention to the line of rocks and tiles which seem to follow it.
To the east of the large stump in meters GM 190-91 there continued to be found greybrown soil over top of a looser, more plastery soil with red and black burn (some) with tile, plaster and pottery. The level here runs around 35-40 cm. below surface level. About 1 1/2 cassette of mostly tile came out from this area. At the lower level most of 2 latte boxes of ceramic came out. As before, some well preserved fine bucchero and redware was found here including a beautiful bucchero base fragment and find # 1. Occasional pieces of tile, plaster and ceramic were burned. About 10 small pieces of pithos were also found. One small fleck of bronze also came from here but no bone or ivory.
