A cut was taken across meters T/54-56 bringing this levelfrom 85 to 95 cm in T/54, and in meter T/56 from 80 to 95 cm. In meter T/54, the soil was brown with pockets of gray/green schyst and tiny rocks. As we moved from T/55 to T/56, the soil gained a heavy amount of inclusions including small rocks and plaster. A negligible amount of tile and plaster fragments were found and approximately 1/5 a latte box of pottery for meters T/54-55 and about 10 pieces of pottery in meter T/56.
Approximately 4-5 cobble sized rocks were removed across these meters - they were randomly placed and found in sterile soil. A piece of iron was found in T/54 at approx. 95 cm; it will be taken down, but not drawn as a find.
N.B. The meters designated T are not being fully excavated to the north in order to leave a dam between T-25 and T-26.
Continued to clean down around the rock and tile in meter U/53 to approx. 85-90 cm. A large piece of terracotta was encountered in the northwest corner of this meter - possibly ridgepole - but it was left in place to dry out over the afternoon. Two fragments of iron were found.
The cut begun in meters V-W/54-55 into the "burn layer" was continued and computed. The burn layer seem to go lower as you move north - since we lost it as moved north. The burn is replaced by the dark soil with heavy inclusions in V-W/54 and by the grey/green soil characteristic in meter V-W/5.
Note: Excavation in this area halted for 1989, to be continued in 1990. At the conclusion of excavation a final trench and stratigraphy summary will be made. See M. Wilcox and S. Leach for related information.
