4 boxes of tile
3 cartons of pottery
We begin by removing the strip extending north to south along the east edge of the trench and parallel to the north south wall in grids 38-39 f-P beginning at F38, moving into 39 and then southward at a depth of 30-40cm. Here a burn layer is encountered which continues that found just to the west along the wall. the clayel soil is full of red and black matter and masses of this deteriorated plaster, terracotta and bunred wood, as well as some chunks of a yellow-orange plaster with reed impressions and much tile. Pottery is plentiful and as many fragments of fine bucchero and buff, even white, wares emerge as impsto and coasrswares, the former includes some sottile and fragments of a cucchero libd aor small plate (#7), also a painted buff sherd (#5). Bronze slag is plentiful and some larger fragments also occur (1,2,3,8-10,12). at least one fragment of ivory (#6). Pottery and other finds grow surface arond the middle of 39, east of which point the burn deposit subsides, replaced by a clayey, dark tan siol encountered higher upm but with a good deal of white and yellow matter, Here in the south east of G39 a number of fragments of bronze including #11 come up. Pottery decreases markedly to the suoth of F, mainly fine pottery which was so plentiful.

We continue this morning,s cut southward from H-I38-39 as far as midJ. and continue to meet burn layer in the lower part of the cut. Pottery is found in substantial quantity, now mainly impasto and coasrs ware as well as some bucchero and fine buff ware. Large and small lumps and flakes of bronze also occur (#6) and much tile. Among the pottery is a fragment of a crucible (#1) and some extremely fine bucchero.
Also continue to dig the same cut in grids P37-38 and O37-38, which we clear before moving north from grids P38-39 to compelte the cut. Here too, burn layer soil is encountered in places at the floor of the cut. here little is found except some tile and a great deal of bronze slag in sticks, lumps and balls. The sparse pottery does, however, include some fine bucchero sottile.
Also continue cleaning the rockfall in grids N-P 35-35, which yeilds sherds of fiarly coarse pottery. Nearby, in grid N33, finish removing a large pot. (see supra p. 243 ), #8.
