Today work continued in L.5206. I plan to bring this part of trench down to the level of L.5207. There is no significant change in the soil color and texture, and no architectural indication is emerging. Occasionally, some ‘Ubaid Painted sherds were recovered during the excavations from this locus.

Just to double check with different light, L.5211 area was carefully removed and this work confirmed that the suggested wall (L.5201 from last year) does NOT exist. I am convinced that this area is only part of L.5205 and it continues even further north for about 30-40 cm until the edge of the settlement. After that, the slope of the Ubaid settlement begins, which is filled with debris by the later periods’ activities forming the actual mound until today.

In order to find out more about the bricks we found yesterday, we also worked in L.5207. It became clear today that those two different types of bricks are not necessarily represent in-site walls, but they might have been collapsed or fallen from elsewhere to this area, even though they are horizontal. As a result, I begin to believe that this locus’ area is an outdoor space used for activities that are unclear to us. From know on, without any architectural evidence, my goal is to determine what kind of activities were possibly taking place in this trench.

L.5209 within L.5207 has expanded a little in each direction. In the coming days, I will pay attention to this locus and L.5207 by using one worker in order to come up with a reasonable explanation concerning their relationship.

Has note The purpose of the daily journal was to record the activities taking place in a trench each day. This included which loci were excavated, how and why loci were excavated and the ongoing impressions of the relationships among loci. It should be noted that journals record the actions, impressions and ideas of trench supervisors during the excavations. They are not, therefore, the final interpretations or syntheses of the emerging data.
