Description | The excavator daily defined artificial loci when removing the Theatron fill in order to separate material remains. This was also to account for any extraneous inclusion in the top levels of the fill that might have been deposited or contaminated during consolidation and reconstruction at the upper levels of the Theatron seating. For this reason, this locus material remains will be ignored in favor of lower strata with more secure terminus post quem. Loci 4, 7 and 9 represent a homogenous deposit. The coarse strong brown fill soil (Munsell 7.5 YR 5/6) is composed of harsh textured sand with some large ashlar inclusions. The excavator anticipated a densely packed ashlar construction technique to provide the fill and foundation of the interior of the Theatron seating. Instead, the fill was primarily soil based with ashlar inclusions that were not purposely laid in a solid construction technique. It is possible that the sand and stone construction technique was an earthquake preventative measure; adapted from earlier architectural lessons which proved tightly packed stone construction was not effective in preventing collapse. The fill behind the Theatron is universally an amalgamation of reused architectural elements and rough-cut stone. Nabataean fine ware was recovered. |
