Description
  • The east periphery wall was built-up with an additional three courses at this time. The upper portion was noticed at the opening of the trench and was assigned Locus 3 on the Daily Field Form Sequence Number 25005. A wooden beam was added to make the building more resistant to earthquakes, and then the wall was built-up an additional 1.25 m (approximately). The ashlars of this later section are smaller than those of the earlier stage. The measurements for this wall are 26.67 m (north-south) and 2.37 m (east-west), including the stylobate. These measurements are discussed on Daily Field Form Sequence Number 25023.
  • Locus 3 is the east periphery wall and was almost certainly built in two stages, the first of which possibly occurred during the initial period of Temple construction. This was determined by examining the cleared face of the wall in SP 38. There is a division in the wall where wood was probably used to stabilize the wall in case of an earthquake. The reason the two parts of the wall are considered to be of different periods is that the ashlars of the lower part of the wall are noticeably larger than those of the upper section. However, not enough of the side of the wall has been excavated to make this conclusion certain. It would make sense to have a wall at that place even during the earliest period of the Temple building. Wall 3 could have served as a division between the canalization system that also has been found and the 'Lower Market,' protecting the latter from possible floods.
