Description | Locus 2 extended across the entirety of the original trench and was comprised of a yellowish brown, medium-colored soil that was also claylike in texture. As the locus progressed in depth, soil progressively became slightly mottled, with limestone, terracotta, and carbon inclusions, but the soil remained the same basic color and consistency throughout. Locus 2 also contained some small rocks and carbon patches, especially in the northern and western areas of the locus. A fair amount of material was recovered from within the locus, including relatively high quantities of tile, pottery, and slag; very little bone was recovered from the locus. All materials recovered appear ancient in date, indicating that Locus 2 is a contextualized, stratified deposit. Furthermore, materials were better preserved the deeper in the locus they were recovered. A slight curvilinear rock feature, running roughly east-west across the trench, appeared at the bottom of the locus. Locus 2 is equivalent to Locus 6 in the northern and western extension of the trench. |
