Work began with a pick pass of the entire trench, beginning in the north and working south. In the NE quarter of the trench, a number of medium-sized limestone rocks began to appear and are situated within a new, grayish, hard packed soil. In the NE quarter of the trench, soil is still medium yellowish brown, somewhat claylike, and slightly mottled, although this may be due to the stump and its roots that were in this part of the trench. Throughout the northern half of the trench, large fragments of well-preserved tile and ceramics, and high quantities of ceramics, were recovered. Additionally, iron slag and two small seeds were found and both of these materials will be bulk found. Soil was hand-sorted directly into buckets in the trench and 1 in 3 buckets are dry sieved. In the northern half of the pick pass, a large bronze fragment (Find #1) was recovered.
The SE quarter of the trench was then picked. While picking, smaller rocks were overturned while more, possibly larger rocks were felt beneath. Trowels were then used to scrape up loose soil and define rocks still in situ. Like in the NE quarter of the trench, soil continues to be medium yellowish brown in color and slightly mottled. Soil is
hand-sorted directly into buckets in the trench and 1 in 3 buckets was dry sieved. A fair amount of tile and a noticeable increase in the amount of pottery was found and much of the tile and pottery are large, well-preserved pieces, indicating that they are not eroded and that we may be approaching an ancient surface.

Work continued this afternoon by completing this morning's pick pass, by picking the SW quarter of the trench. Here, a number of medium-sized rocks were found as well as high quantities of tile and pottery. Soil continues to be medium yellowish brown in color, claylike, and slightly mottled, with some larger charcoal fragments. Soil continues to be hand-sorted directly into buckets and 1 in 3 buckets are dry sieved. A number of finds came from this quarter of the trench (the lowest in elevation), including 2 pieces of vitrified terracotta (Finds #2, 4), a cephalomorphic fragment (Find #3), and a crucible fragment (Find #5). As 5 fragments of vitrified terracotta have now been found in this locus, vitrified terracotta will be
bulk found for the remainder of the locus. Additionally, a large bronze fragment (Find #6) was recovered from the sieve.
Another pick pass was made in the northern half of the trench in order to better reveal the new, grayish, harder soil that began to appear this morning in the NW quarter of the trench. The pick pass was a light one and the new, grayish soil began to appear throughout the northern half of the trench. Trowels were used to scrape away the remainder of the darker brown Locus 2 soil. Soil continues to be hand sorted directly into buckets in the trench, with 1 in 3 buckets dry sieved. A fair amount of material was recovered from this pick pass, although there is less tile and ceramics than in the southern half of the trench, especially the SW quarter.
A pick pass was also made in the SE quarter of the trench, where the darker soil of Locus 2 is still present and where there are no larger rocks. Soil continued to be hand-sorted directly into buckets and 1 in 3 buckets are dry sieved. Closing elevations for the day were taken.
