Description | Locus 1 is a dark brown humus layer with organic material including leaves, grass, and roots. Several small rocks five to ten centimeters in size are included in the soil matrix. One stump is present in the eastern baulk wall of the trench. Modern iron was found in this level. Small concentrations of terra cotta and pottery were found in this layer, but no bone. One piece of worked chert was found. What artifacts were found were fairly worn. The soil pack was loose and the locus was relatively shallow--between three and ten centimeters deep. |
