Top (m) Opening elevation: 893.363 m.
Description This is an irregular layer of unhewn boulders and field stones dry lay to abut the side walls (Loci 31 and 32) of Vault Locus 12. When first uncovered it extended in an uneven line almost to the unexcavated east balk. The eastern portion of this layer was removed to execute the sondage Locus 17; however, no indications that the stone layer actually continued into the east balk were detected during the excavation of Locus 17. The layer slopes slightly upward toward the west, merging into the rubble base of the constructed insertion/blockage (Locus 29) at the entrance to the vault. It is unclear whether this stone layer may have served as an early floor, or was created only as a supportive leveling course for the later insertion/blockage.
