Description Locus 21 is a foundation wall of hewn, limestone (or hard sandstone?) blocks extending under the Retaining Wall (Locus 15). The north faces of the blocks are roughly chiseled and certainly not exposed in antiquity; a gap between this wall and the curbstone (Locus 20) was probably filled with a lead pipe (Locus 13) or other canalization system and covered with capstones, which would obscure the foundation course. Note that this wall also extends under the second stair tread (from the bottom) of Locus 7 and may run into or abut with the west North-South Wall of the Staircase (Locus 6); this relationship is obscured by the lead pipe (Locus 13) and the pedestal of soil underneath and needs to be further explored.
Top (m) Opening depth: 899.116 m at west; 899.101 m at east.
