General remarks | This locus is fill in the E-Center of the trench just below topsol. The fill contained compact, mudbricky soil and several 10-20cm cobblestones. We originally thought we saw a N-S mudbrick wall in this area but later changed our minds and decided that it was just eroded occupational debris that marked the boundary with this material to the east in the trench (Locus 3, 4) and the more clayey fill in the west (L2). We removed a single 15cm level of this locus and then merged the material below it with locus 4. Contains middle bronze pottery. Excavated on a natural slpoe so elevataions are higher on the eastern end. |

Has note | Contexts excavated in trenches were recorded using the "locus system." A locus is any discrete three-dimensional entity excavated in a trench. The key to the locus system is the recognition that a locus is any one thing. Differences in soil composition or texture are therefore as important as, for example, the difference between a pit and a wall. If two entities were distinct, they were considered separate loci and were therefore assigned separate locus numbers. It should also be noted that every context excavated in a trench was given a locus number and thus the trench itself is made up completely of excavated loci. |
