Description Locus 4 is a layer of rubble and tumble from a period of destruction. It was possibly the cause for Byzantine abandonment, or it may have occurred some time after. The rubble layer, Munsell 7.5YR 4/4, overlies the mortar (Locus 5), the layer of abandonment (Locus 6), up against the east edge of the mortar (Locus 5), against the column (Locus 2) and the wall (Locus 11). Destruction, therefore, must post-date the building of the wall, the plaster around the column and the mortar used to reinforce the column and possibly the wall. Within this rubble area there was a compact concentration of stones, some marble, tile, plaster, tesserae, glass and pottery sherds, most of which could not be assigned to a culture. One of the strongest impressions of a destruction, however, was a column drum found sitting right above the rubble layer which was cracked in several pieces and had obviously tumbled in a forceful fall. It may have fallen from the column in SP 26 (Locus 2), or from a column in the Upper Temenos it must have fallen quite far, for it suffered unfortunate damage.
