Definition Plaster of the Temple East Exterior Wall
Description A thick plaster covering the rough interior face of the Temple east exterior wall; actually, at least two layers—a rough undercoat marked with scoring and nail holes, and a decorated finish coat. The upper wall was faced with molded plaster, and the lower wall with painted plaster. The plaster at the base of the wall also incorporates fragments of roof tile for added strength. Unfortunately, very little of the finished plaster remains in this part of the East Corridor, and only small patches of the undercoat remain. At the base of the wall, a thicker layer of plaster is preserved, but this feature may represent slumped or collapsed plaster. Note that this plaster might very well represent a later phase of decoration or repair in the East Corridor, but has been listed with Phase I since the construction technique of the Exterior Wall (see above) indicates that the interior face of the wall was certainly plastered in the same phase in which it was constructed.
