Description This soil level probably served as the second floor bedding of the PWC area, providing a surface approximately 0.10-0.15 m higher than the previous bedding level. It consists of extremely hard-packed, yellowish soil (Munsell 10YR 5/8, Yellowish Brown) with small inclusions, primarily chert (wadi stones) and sandstone fragments, with some limestone chips, tiny pieces of charcoal, and cultural materials also attested. Alternately, this may have served as a leveling layer for the overlying, late floor bedding (Locus 1). However, the fact that the overlying East Wall (Propylaeum Staircase Retaining Wall) is built on this level and not the underlying Locus 9 installation argues against this interpretation.
Underlies Locus 6.
Phase IV
Overlies Loci 10, 11.
