Caption | The Phase 2 semi-circular staircase and entrance to the mosque (June 2013). A ziyādah provided separation between the now main mosque entrance in the east wall and the markets on the axial street. The doorway and upper two courses of masonry were recently reconstructed from original stone, but on a map by Charles Barry in ca. 1819 the original entrance is described as a “rich doorway”. The two upper semi-circular steps were missing (replaced by straight steps). A bench once existed right (north) of the staircase. The semi-circular stairs were added after the building of the shops (to left) |
