Daily Log 1/8/11

1/8/11

This morning began with a pick pass in the western half of the trench. While sorting soil, a lateral sima fragment preserving portions of the cavetto and the sima was found. (SF #1)

Soil was sorted into buckets and dumped intp CB 43 as backfill.  Soil remains to be the same color and texture as Locus 2 . It is olive green with patches of blue coming through, and very clay-like. There is a definite rock packing in the western half of the trench that we are defining with trowels. Another pick pass was done in the

eastern half of the trench. Soil is being sorted into buckets and dumped. The rocks in the western half are being defined further. It appears that this layer nearest the rock packing is producing much larger architectural terracotta fragments. Another pick pass was done in the eastern half of the trench. Soil was sorted into buckets and dumped into CB 43 as backfill. The rock packing in the western half of the trench was further defined in order to clean up the floor of the trench for closing photos. Another pick pass was done in the middle and western thirds of the trench. Soil was sorted into buckets and dumped. Blue patches are more frequent. There continues to be a high volume of large architectural terracotta fragments throughout the trench. With the remaining time before lunch, baulk walls will be trimmed, the floor of the trench

will be scraped down and roots will be clipped.

PM

After lunch, final touches were made before closing the trench. Baulks were finished, roots were clipped and closing elevations and photos were taken. Plastic was laid down and the trench was backfilled.
