From excavating locus 7 with trowels over the past few days we had reached the same level as locus 6.  The two loci seem to be part of a possible ancient surface showing a brownish/grey color of soil with occasional patches of galestra and limestone popping up.  As a result we fused loci 6 and 7 into locus 11 after levelling the floor of locus 7 a bit.  Opening depths for locus 11 are:

261 S  281 E     84.4 cm b.d.

263 S  281 E     88.9 cm b.d.

261 S  279 E     84.9 cm b.d.

263 S  279 E     82.7 cm b.d.

center               92.9 cm b.d.

We also put in pick passes on locus 10 and we are now at the same depth as locus 11 (previously 6 and 7).  The tile spread now in locus 11 did not extend into locus 10.  As a result we decided to lift the tiles and put passes in under the tile spread as we had not hit sterile soil yet.  We recovered a piece of ridged pottery from locus 11 alond with an unusual flange piece.

Material recovered from locus 11 was as follows:

Terracotta               1/3 cassette (tile spread)

Pottery                   4 pieces; 3 impasto, 1 orange impasto

Special Finds         1) Ridged pottery ( )

2) Unusual flange ( )

Material Recovered from levelling of locus 7:

Terracotta               1/3 latte box

Pottery                   5 pieces; 1 coarseware, 4 impasto

Closing depths for locus 11 for the day:

261 S  279 E     93.4 cm b.d.

263 S  281 E     85.6 cm b.d.

261 S  281 E     96.4 cm b.d.

263 S  281 E     93.9 cm b.d.

center               97.6 cm b.d.

Pick passes were put in on locus 10 to see what was under the level of the tile spread.  An unusual flange piece was recovered.

Material recovery for the day was:

Terracotta                 1 and 1/16 latte box

Pottery                     9 pieces; 2 impasto, 7 orange impasto

Special Finds            1) unusual flange ( )

Closing depths for locus 10 for the day:

261 S  281 E     94.6 cm b.d.

261 S  282 E     95.4 cm b.d.

263 S  281 E     104.3 cm b.d.

263 S  282 E     93.8 cm b.d.

center               96.8 cm b.d.
