Daily Log

July 11, 2001

The rain from the day before had left the soil too wet to work in the morning today.  But the lack of sun was also causing work to be done during the afternoon to go slwer as the soil was still a little damp.  We grabbed opening depths for locus 10 as we did not get a chance to get closing depths the day before.  Unfortunately the rain seemed to have made the floors rather uneven and perhaps even packed down some of the soil we did not get a chance to get off the ground during baulk wall trim the earlier day.  Opening depths for locus 10 were as follows:

261 S  281 E     67.5 cm b.d.

263 S  282 E     87.3 cm b.d.

261 S  281 E     61 cm b.d.

263 S. 282 E.     72.4 cm b.d.

center                81.5 cm b.d.

Pick passes were put in locus 10, but because of the dampness of the soil we stopped and began excavating with trowels as the cut soil was pulling out in large chunks.  We were also getting close to the level of locus 6 and did not want to have a tile spread pulled up because of the cut soil coming up in chunks that were big.  Locus 7

was excavated with trowels because of the wetness of the soil and also to try and find more tiles.

Material recovered from locus 7:

terracotta                    6 pieces, worn

Material recovered from locus 10:

terracotta                    6 pieces

pottery                        2 pieces; 2 impasto
