Work continued in the north extension of trench 18. In the morning the workmen cleaned a profile along the northern edge of the so-called wall foundation in grids J 28-32. The red layer, including burned pottery sherds, tile fragments and wall plaster continues to appear under these stones. Therefore it was decided that the trench should be extended to the south in order to determine the southern boundary of the room. (See profile and photos p.
.) Then two workmen began to clear the black soil/carbon layer in grids L-M 28-30. There is some pottery near the top of this structure but it tapers off considerably near the bottom. The pottery is the same as that found in the red layer, so these two strata appear to belong to the same destruction level. However the pottery in the black soil appears much more heavily burned. Part of a small cooking bell was found in grid L 29/30.
This black soil stratum does not continue up to the west foundations -- but here only the red layer is present (see profile p. 68 .)
A handle with volutes in the corners was found, but will be recorded in
with the other pottery from
the red layer. The two workmen continued excavating the black soil stratum down to a level consisting of small, packed, chipped rocks and a redish clay/soil (visible at bottom of profile on p. 68 ). This stratum has produced many fragments of coarse ware vases. Grids J-M 28-30 were cleared of the black soil stratum.
In the afternoon two workmen cleaned the black soil stratum from the north half of the trench.
