AM

The morning began with leveling the northwest corner of the trench where the large tree stump used to be. Following this, we sued heavy pickaxes to do a pick pass through the eastern section of the trench with the intention of making the whole trench even in preparation for the opening photos of Locus 4 . Terra cotta and ceramic material are still consistent however, we see a change in soil color in the western section of the trench, where the elevation is a bit lower than the east (5cm). In addition to the change in soil color, the soil also feels to be more dense than the previous layer, which is one of the reasons why it feels necessary to separate Locus 3 from it.

After our pick pass through the eastern section of the trench, we observed the extent of the evenness throughout and saw that the north west corner was still a bit elevated over the rest by about three centimeters. Thus, we took a heavy pickaxe and removed the compacted dirt in that area. Terra cotta and pottery are still being uncovered frequently.

Upon closer inspection, we observed that the north east corner of the trench was also a bit raised. We concluded that this was the result of the numerous roots from the old stumps that used to be there.

After breaking up the loose dirt from the north west and north east corners, a piece of vitrified terra cotta was uncovered (Special Find #1).
